April 6, 1928, Jason Chapter

The first thing I have to say about this chapter is that Jason is a hateful person. I almost feel bad for him because I don't understand how one person can have so much hatred and disgust in their life. He discriminates against basically every one, based on religion, skin color, and gender. However, continuing on in the Jason chapter, it was not a simple breeze. The writing was very complex and difficult to follow the story line however, the continual hatred feeling was always present. There are a few ironies throughout this chapter. Out of all Caroline's children, Jason was the worst and most unreliable. However, he ends up being the one to have to carry on the family name. Jason is also obsessed with materialistic items and his own appearance. Jason's African American servant begged him for tickets to a show but instead Jason burned them in a fire. This shows that Jason wants people to view him and only him as wealthy and seeming to have many possessions in his life. Overall, I almost feel bad for Jason and wonder how he turned out to be such a hateful and despicable person.

  1. After reading your analysis, I really like how you pointed out the ironies found within the text. I overlooked them while I was reading, and this post really put them in perspective. I, too, agree that Jason is a hateful and resentful person, however he still managed to be the one to carry on the Compson name in good standing. Like you, he is definitely not my favorite character.. I'm not a fan of cocky racists. I also enjoyed hearing your voice through the writing. Seeing that I know you very well in person, I can definitely hear your voice when I read this.

  3. Right off the bat, I completely agree with your views on Jason. What a very easy person to hate, right? I like how you point out the ironies that are present in this chapter. Jason is a very hateful person, yet he carries on the Compson family name. I like how you use an honest voice in your posts as well, it makes it more relatable and understandable!

  4. I agree, Jason sucks. I think the little ironies that you pointed out throughout the chapter are some of the worst things about Jason. I hate how Caroline adores him even though he is scum. Jason is basically the culmination of all the bad characteristics you could ever think of, which I think you pointed out well.

  5. Liked what you said about Jason's character being so dislikable. Agree with you 100 million percent. Also loved how you pointed out that the hate is the only constant thing about this chapter. This book is called the sound and the fury; Jason's chapter represents the fury in possible the most genius literary set-up ever. Loved that you pointed all that out.
